THE HOUSING LARK

A Calypso Opera

By Sam Selvon

Adapted by Ayesha Antoine-Brown

“Is no use dreaming Is no use dreaming, thinking Lying on your backside musing Of the green greener grass”

Brixton, 1965. Three women – Jean, Matilda and Teena - stand on a street corner and talk about the dreams of the men they know.

“What would take we ten months to save on our own, we could do in six and own our own home.”

Ayesha Antoine Brown’s adaptation will see Selvon’s comic masterpiece reimagined as a calypso opera from the perspective of the women in Battersby’s life, against an original Calypso score.
